Key Components of a Shrimp Hatchery

  • Site Selection: Requires clean, silt-free seawater (salinity 30–36 ppt), reliable power with standby generators, freshwater access, and proximity to broodstock or transport routes.
  • Core Facilities:
  • Maturation & Spawning: Tanks where adult broodstock are conditioned and induced to spawn (often utilizing eyestalk ablation).
  • Larval Rearing Tanks: Indoor concrete, fiberglass, or circular tanks for early life stages.
  • Live Food Culture: Production areas for microalgae (Chaetoceros, Skeletonema), rotifers, and brine shrimp (Artemia).
  • Water Treatment: Sand filters, sedimentation basins, and aeration systems (like roots blowers) to maintain water quality.
  • Hatchery Scale:
  • Small: Produces 1–5 million fry per year.
  • Medium: Produces 10–20 million fry per year.
  • Large: Produces over 20 million fry per year run by commercial corporations.
  • Operational Stages: Spawning and egg collection → Nauplii hatching (12–18 hours) → Larval stages (Zoea, Mysis) fed live phytoplankton and zooplankton → Post-larvae (PL) nursery and harvest around PL15–PL25.
